We arrived in Sicily at noon and picked up our car to drive to our apartment at the hilly Castelmola. Here are the views from our balcony!
After settling in, feeding my hungry Clare Bear and exploring the 5 streets that made up our tiny town, we decided to go into Taormina for a celebratory holiday dinner
We needed to wait almost an hour for our table at Osteria Nero D’avola, so we passed our time in this lovely wine bar across the way where I discovered this little fella!
Breakfast the next morning! We decided to drive to the market in Catania that day as apparently Saturday was the liveliest and most interesting day to visit the market. Clare may have crashed into a parked police car on the way there.
The market wasn’t quite as big as we were expecting, but there were lots of Swordfish on display
We saw lots of churches and squares
But mostly ate!
It was a food walking tour after all – which suited us just fine
That evening we drove 30 minutes north of Catania to a nearby seaside town
We decided to walk another half an hour down a coastal path to the port
We found a cute little restaurant there that probably had the freshest seasfood of our whole entire trip
It was divine!
Easy like Sunday morning
We spent the day in Castelmola after two days of stressful driving for Clare
With views like this in our local resturant, who needs to go anywhere?
the food wasn’t bad either
We managed to sit in the very front tables over looking the mountain when the couple sitting there left
Pretty no?
We explored the town
Had our own little picnic by the lookout tower
And soaked in the views!
We had dinner at this cute little place owned by Ciccino who liked to sing for his customers
it was a little bit chilly, but the the Pizza’s weren’t bad
We thought we’d hop on the local bus to Taormina the next day and spend the day exploring the famous city. We waited patiently for it to arrive but after an hour of sitting around, we decided to hike our way down
It took us an hour to get down and half of the hiking path was closed down, but we had some great views of Castelmola as we walked away from it
When we arrived at Taormina, we rewarded ourselves with a tasty lunch and soaked in all that the city had to offer
Peekaboo!
We were close to buying a painting, but thought we’d wait to see if we could actually afford it after a few more days on our holiday (turns out we couldn’t)
Taormina was as busy and as touristy as everyone described it to be!
We thought we’d take the cable car down to the local beach and get away from the crowds
The beach wasn’t the best for lying (hard pebbles took the place of sand) nor was the sea nice and warm, but the views were lovely
Perfect for cocktails at sunset!
We went back to the city center that evening for our dinner at TripAdvisors #1 recommended restuarant: Vineria Modi Taormina
The next day we started bright and early and went for a hike on mount etna
It was a self guided hike that lasted 4 hours
The views were amazing!!!
And Clare was thriving off the energy that nature gave her
After approximately 2 hours of hiking, we found one of the craters and stopped for lunch
Clare soaking in the views
We saw some wildlife up near our lunch spot
The walk back was much easier – all downhill
The terrain and views were quite different too
Volcanic Stone
Me leading the way
Don’t touch that – it’s prickly!
This was the refuge where we started and ended our hike: 1741 meters above sea level!
Me looking triumphant after conquering the hike
We changed in the car after our hike to something a bit more presentable and made our way to Terraze del Etna for a wine tour I booked in
The winery looked quite posh, so we helped ourselves to loads of selfies before we started
Isn’t it pretty?
Me at the vineyard
and then at the tour
We had a private tasting of all these wines when our tour ended – Carusu was definitely my favourite wine of the whole holiday
We drove down south to spend the next few days at a botique hotel called Masseria della Volpe
Clare wasn’t feeling too well when we arrived, so I helped myself to some delicious room service
We had the most delicious buffet breakfast everyday out by the pool
The grounds of Masseria della Volpe
We spent most days tanning by the pool, reading our books and wine tasting… Bliss!
One evening we had a private meal at this restuarant/home
They only had one wine on offer for the night, and with a name like this do you need any other?
Each plate was lovingly prepared and tasted incredible
They all commanded photos too
The next time we visit Sicily, we’ll definitely come back here again
On our last day, we saw “Dionysus – the God twice born” at the Ancient Greek theatre in Taormina
